Charges/Sentences/Bail Entered Into the Jail Register of Prisoners
 
 
  The Linn County Sheriff’s Office has on file records of individuals who have been brought to the Linn County Jail dating back to 1891. Ages of the individuals entered into the old jail registers range from nine years of age up to 87 years of age.

The youngest individual, being nine years of age, listed in the Jail Register, was arrested on August 8, 1937 for being a Runaway. He was taken to the Boys Training School.

The oldest individual, being 87 years of age, listed in the Jail Register, was arrested on June 23, 1919, for being Insane and was taken to an Asylum.

Charges entered into the Jail Registry during the early 1900's are ones you may no longer see individuals being arrested and lodged in the county jail for. Some of these charges are as follows:

  1930 Fail to make Trappers Report $25 fine  
  1939 Violation of Pure Food Law $50 fine  
         
  The jail register in the early days showed the number of insanity cases they had for a few years, they are as follows:  
  1929 28 insanity cases 1930 17 insanity cases  
  1931 23 insanity cases 1932 8 insanity cases through May  
 
  From November 5, 1891 thru February 2, 1940 there were a total of 3,421 prisoners entered/logged into the jail registers. The inmates were moved into the new jail located on the 4th floor of the courthouse on February 19, 1940.

Meals in the early 1900's were $0.24 each and were paid for prior to the individual leaving jail.

 
 
  Times have changed over the years when it comes to individuals being arrested and the types of sentencing and bail amounts that were imposed on them. Individuals of all ages were brought to the Linn County Jail and processed. If the individual was a juvenile, they were taken either to a Juvenile Detention or to a Reform School.
