Linn County Sheriff Jim Yon reports on January 24, 2019, at 4:25 p.m., deputies responded to Peoria road near White Oak road, east of Corvallis, for a crash involving a 13-year-old male pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

Robert Bird, 58, of West Linn, was traveling east on Peoria Road in his Auto Zone delivery van when he passed a Corvallis School District bus. The bus was operated by Leo Justin Hund, 68, of Blodgett. The bus was parked, facing east on the south shoulder of the road and out of the lane of travel. The red flashing stop lights were not activated at the bus stop.   As Bird passed by the school bus, a juvenile ran out from in front of the school bus, into the lanes of travel and was struck.

The juvenile was transported by Corvallis Fire medics to the Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where he was treated for a serious injury to the arm.

Bird was not injured and the van sustained minor damage. He was wearing his seatbelt and it does not appear that speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor.

Linn County Deputies were assisted by the Corvallis Fire Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Corvallis Police Department, and the Linn County Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

The investigation is ongoing.
