Linn County Sheriff Jim Yon reports his deputies investigated a perceived threat at the Tangent Elementary School. This morning at 8:54 a.m., a staff member called 911 and reported seeing a man with a rifle wearing body armor walking near the school. The school activated a lockdown to keep the students and staff safe.

Deputies responded and located the male immediately. Through the investigation, deputies learned the male was legally carrying a rifle and handgun openly, and often does around town. The open carry of firearms is legal in Oregon.

Deputies determined that the male was walking to city hall to discuss a matter with city personnel. City staff stated that he was professional and made no threats while he was there. After finishing his business with the city, he was returning home when he was contacted by deputies.

The male was cooperative. He was never on school property and never pointed his firearms at anyone or threatened anyone. Deputies counseled him on the perception of walking by a school with a firearm and the alarm it caused, considering recent events nationally.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office takes every threat seriously. Sheriff Yon stated, “The safety of our children and schools is our highest priority.” The investigation is continuing, and all resources are being explored to ensure the safety of the community.
